Do I have to stay with a RV thermostat if I want to replace mine?
I believe that the Dometic A/C unit uses a different thermostat wiring that requires modification of a standard thermostat to work. So it isn't necessarily an "RV" specific thermostat you need, but it is a type of thermostat that needs to be compatible with your Dometic A/C unit.

Also, if you read to the bottom of that link, it talks a little bit about the difference between Dometic digital control for the A/C, and standard analog thermostat control.
