What do you tow with?

Wife and I are interested in a Coachman 336TSIK. Has a good bit of pin weight when stock, over 1800.
I've been looking at new trucks, specifically F250\2500 level. Like the 2017 King Ranch F250 but it only has 1880 in cargo capacity. I'm kinda dumbfounded. I see so many of these sized trucks pulling 5th wheel campers.

If you own a 336, what are you pulling it with?

Under 2000 is a good pin weight that any 3/4 ton can pull. mine is 1800 and pull it with a 2017 GMC Duramax.

Spend a little more and get a F350. Most folks I see towing 5th wheels with their F250's are severely overweight.

Getting a option loaded truck is also killing your cargo carrying capacity. Air Conditioned seats, sunroofs, and other niceties add up weightwise.

Very true! My last 5er had a published pin weight of 1705. Loaded ready to travel was closer to 2300. Add the hitch, 2 adults, 2 small dogs, and a cooler with drinks and snacks and it was close to 3000#. The 3/4 diesel had a payload of 2247. If a generator, compressor, and aux fuel tank had been added as desired that 750# overage would have gone to nearly 1200#.

With our new Cardinal we went with an F350 DRW and the difference the extra two rear wheels/tires makes is unbelievable. Not sure I could ever comfortably pull a fifth wheel with single rear wheels again.

You are looking at around GVWR of 12000 lbs. That would give you a least a pin weight of 2400 lbs- now add hitch, passengers etc you will be at that 3000 lb quickly. As been stated go with a 1 ton ! If you played with how much weight you added to the 5er- you might find a 3/4 gas but you may not be happy with the performance. Of course that is with the assumption you want to stay within Mfg. recommendations.

All that King Ranch bling, reduces payload capacity.
That's why I bought a XLT, over a Lariat, Platinum or King Ranch.
All those bling packages add weight.

We have a Chaparral 336TSIK and love it. Great layout for us. We pull it with a Silverado 2500HD Duramax. I did a ton of research into the configuration before buying. Although we are relatively new and haven't pulled into the Colorado mountains (yet) we have no problem at all.

I don't get that statement, I believe my payload is 4000, so how do you add pin weight? Its just me and the wife a 5th whl hitch and the generator that weighs about 105lbs with fuel. Am I good?

Your payload isn't 4000 lbs, your GVWR is likely 10k lbs and the truck is likely 7000 lbs. A 3500 wouldn't weigh much more, but even a SRW 3500 will have a GVWR of 11,400 lbs. Shoot, my 3500 even with a utility bed, tools, hitch and Braun passengers seat lift for my handicapped wife hits the scales at 8000 lbs, so I have 3400 lbs remaining for the loaded pin weight.

You probably are OK, but until you visit a truck scale, you won't understand how much margin is left. While an empty fiver may have a dry pin weight that is 18% of the total dry weight, with so much forward storage area, a much higher percentage of the cargo weight will be on the pin. Maybe 30-40%.

Our last 5th wheel had a advertised pin weight of 1700 measured 2050 across the scale that put my 2012 2500HD Duramax about 500 over on the GVWR when loaded then went to a bigger truck and now a bigger 5th wheel
DW is happy

I have yet to see a 4000# payload on any 3/4 ton diesel. Most are under 2500#.
Do what any cop or lawyer would do and open the driver door and see what the yellow sticker says.

I have a GMC 3500 and my payload is 3875 (according to the sticker).

Without knowing your exact configuration I would guess your payload is 2500-2900 (according to GMCs website), the only way to know for sure is go look at the sticker on your drivers side door jam.

You 5er has about a 1900 lb pin weight (dry), maybe 2200? loaded.

So 2500-2900 - 2200 = 300-700 leftover for hitch, gen, gear, and passengers. 300-700 - hitch (200?) - passengers (I wont insult anyone here) - gen (105) = -5-395 (so you have somewhere between -5 and 395 leftover.

Does this calculation make sense? Once you look at your dorr sticker and then minus the things above you will see your realistic number.

The 1-Ton Folks you just heard from are absolutely correct.

Take it from someone made this same mistake & who stupidly listened to the trucks salesmen & RV Dealer salesmen & bought a New F-250 for our CC 36CKTS. Just to turn right around & sale it to buy a 1-Ton Dually.

You must do your research and make a selection based on FACTS. Not opinions. Beware of the "you won't have trouble pulling this with your 3/4 ton" people. You MUST pay attention to Max Cargo Capacity and CVWR.

Thanks for the Info Larry. I plan to visit a scale in Sept on the way to the gulf coast just to be sure.

Then what does the driver's door yellow sticker say your payload capacity is?
