Relieve the pressure first on the hot water heater, then sort of stand back, when you remove the rod. I still get wet...always wear my crocs and have a towel close by. Bought my socket at Lowe's...around 6 bucks, has a lifetime warranty.

They make one for the Attwood but not the Suburban.

It seems like I have seen one for the Suburban, but your giving up some of your anode. You would need to replace it more often.

Agree that you always need to relieve the pressure with the pressure relief valve at the top of the HWH before unscrewing the anode rod. Then the water will flow, not spray, out, especially if it is still hot.

If you want to stay dry (and unscalded), keep the plastic edge cleaning tool from your vacuum cleaner nearby when you loosen the hex nut. Fit the large end over the hex nut when the water starts to flow. This creates a spout that prevents water and sediment from running all over the bottom of the HWH enclosure (and down your pant leg).

Some ways to do this without getting your "tennies" wet.

1) The water heater can be drained through the low point drains by opening the hot water low point drain (red one) and walking away. It will glug for about 30 minutes. (This is NOT recommended, however, because debris from the tank will enter your hot water lines and may clog a valve when you put water back into the camper in the spring.

2) Make (somehow) a Suburban RV anode rod with a valve in it. "I" do not recommend this because it will be expensive, it leave all that crud in the tank, and it will NOT be permanent (they still need to make a new one every few years as the anode is consumed).

Camco 11533 RV Anode Rod with Drain for Aluminum Water Heater : Amazon.com : Automotive is only for an Atwood water heater with aluminum tank (that of course does not need one). Totally useless, IMO.

The threads are different and will not fit a Suburban (that actually needs an anode rod).
