Another Water Heater puzzle.

Dryfired my 2018 Suburban SW6DE by accident of course. Ran to Lowe's and grabbed a Universal Utilitech 1500w/120v. Took out the burned suburban #520900, 1445w, 120v. Everything went well except now I'm just getting warm water on electric. Unfortunately I don't have my MultiMeter or many other tools as I'm on the road. Gas side works fine. Just wondering if it could be I need the exact part taken out or what else could be wrong?

Many times the winterization crossover valve is open when this occurs.

Can you post a pic of the valves behind the water heater.

Tuue, must be something else. Going to have to wait until I get home or try a different element. At least I have hot water on propane. It just bugges me when a simple fix doesn't work when it should...ya know?

How long are you waiting for it to heat on electric, as it does take longer than on gas.

Overnight, been leaving electric on and just turning propane on for showers. Before I turn on propane I run the hot water to test the heat. It starts putting out some hot water then goes to just warm.
Before it dryfired the electric worked great, even for weeks after; then went out, promping me to replace the element. We left Michigan in December winterized.

Maybe a flaky on/off power switch? I had lukewarm for a day before just plain cold. Replacing the switch fixed it.

That's definitely worth a look. I guess before taking it out I will wait to get home and check it. Thx.

On the face of the water heater, Up near the top of the water heater is a rubber cover with the two thermostat assemblies behind it. There are circles on the rubber cover that may have the word "reset" on it. Press the left hand side one in fully with your finger tip just to be sure the hi-limit/eco Tstat has not tripped for the electric heating element.

The right hand side circle is for the gas thermostat.

The electric element shouldn't work at all with a tripped eco stat but since im not there I'm not sure if this warm water is residual from when you had propane on.

Two questions:

1. Do you have 110-120 VAC at the element?

2. Is the resistance of your new element 10-11 ohms?

Yeah, I read it. Hunches and guesses are not going to solve the OP's problem. For crying out loud, I'd just swing into a Harbor Freight and buy a $6 mulitmeter and figure out what the problem is.

Is the element actually a 110 volt?

Any chance that the element was mispackaged and it's actually a 220 volt element in a 110 volt package? I think your plan to pick up a multimeter and checking the resistance is a good plan.

Even if this was the case, the OP would be getting hot water — it would just take about twice as long to get to temperature with the wrong element. The OP let it heat overnight, so the water should have been hot either way.

Thanks all for the robust conversation. I'll need my MultiMeter, I've got four of them at home, When the fix is done I'll post the solution. Won't be until April though..
