Atwood GC1A-4E Water Heater
I have an Atwood Combination 10 Gal. Gas/Electric water heater Model Number: GC10A-4E. I have had the Shasta Phoenix 3BL 5th wheel unit for about 12 months.
Starting yesterday I have developed an issue with the water heater. I have been operating the water heater on electric as I am a seasonal camper and the electricity is included in my fees. I have used the gas option as well just to verify that it works. The switches for the operation of the water heater are located in the control panel along with the tank senors, battery level indicator, lights, slides,awning and the DSI-FLT indicator light.
Upon operating the water heater "electric" switch the water heater commences to heat and within 15 minutes there is hot water. What has changed however is that after about 45 minutes the DSI-FLT red light comes on. This did not happen previously. When I turn the water heater switch off this indicator also turns off. As soon as I turn the water heater electric rocker switch back on this DSI-FLT indicator light also comes back on. It was not obvious to me last night but I noticed this morning that the water temperature appears to be way hotter than it used to be.
I completely drained the water heater this morning and then proceeded to operate it with the gas option. It fired right away and within 15 minutes there was hot water. I was expecting the burner to shut down as the water was hot enough. The blower did not shut down though and the water in the tank continued to heat. I let it run for an additional 15 minutes and it would not shut down. I don't have a way to test the actual temperature of the hot water but it was way to hot. Probably has the possibility to scald. When I turned off the electric option earlier this morning it was also way to hot.
Does it seem that the problem lies with the thermostat or the circuit board or something else?
The instruction manual that came with the water heater is pretty sketchy and does not have that much information for troubleshooting.
I believe the water heater is supposed to heat to 140 degrees and then cut out until the temperature falls to 115 degrees at which time it would cut in again.
If the thermostat is the culprit where exactly would it be located. I didn't notice anything via the outside access door and I have not looked on the inside where the bypass and water supply lines feed in to the water heater.
I have sort of a basic understanding of the water heater gleaned from trying to make sense of the sparse info in the manual.
Any help would be much appreciated.
