Black Tank Venting Accessories???

I've seen several accessories that attach to the black tank roof vent to improve venting but, if I've read the product literature correctly, in all cases it involves removing the existing roof vent tube and caulking to install the new one. I'm all for increasing the venting process but don't want to anger the Water Leak Gods by disturbing the existing caulking, which is fine. Is there a product that simply replaces the existing vent cap without having to remove and re-seal the roof vent piece?

Cyclone Sewer Vent can be installed without disturbing calking. I've done it on a couple of vents. You can purchase at Walmart and CW for sure and probably Amazon I would assume.

That is one of the models that I was looking at and hoping to use but the video instructions from Camco show them removing the caulking during the install process. How did you install yours without disturbing the caulking?

I more or less twisted and broke the old cap off which left the pvc vent pipe. Then I put the new cap on and put the screws in place to hold it on. I did not worry about the shroud that would side down on to the roof since no one would see it any ways since it is a 5th wheel and over 13 feet tall. That way I would not have to worry about compromising the factory calking.

looks like an easy retrofit....caulking shouldn't be a problem...not much to it.
what i dont understand is why my black tank flush cap [where you hook up city water to help the dump process ] which fits tightly to close when not in use...will end up out of fitting and just hang there.... almost like black tank gas was blowing it out... have no smells from tank in the bathroom...assume factory vent is doing its job...dont know.

The purpose or the water connection is to "flush" the tank. "Stuff" gets stuck on the sides and sensors in the tank, when you connect to the flush port it actually connects to multiple sprayer ports inside the tank and sprays at different angles and hits the sides of the tank to help clean the sides of the tank, not really doing anything for the smells.

Make sure when flushing that your black valve is open so that you don't risk black water back washing into the fresh supply of the Jose you are using to flush the tank.

Wasn't a big deal to remove the old cap just don't rush, clean things good and just be gentle when your working on the roof.

vent pipe can be too deep in black tank

Our houseboat has a vent pipe that wasn't supported. It fell down into the tank, and when it filled a little, it no longer vented. The aluminum black tank then blew up like a balloon, bending the two steel C channels that supported it. You could run a sewer snake down the vent to see if that is the issue, but you'd need to "feel" when it hit the end of the pipe and went into the tank then see how much deeper it is to the bottom of the tank. That is assuming the vent pipe goes straight into the tank.

Check your roof vent and flush with a hose. Could be the vent is plugged and there is a gas build up creating a little pressure on the flush line cap when your dump valve is closed.

thanks for these two replies.....it will take a little surgery up on the roof...the vent cap would have to come off...disturbing the caulking, but that can be made good again...but am scared to find out if the stand pipe is too deep into black tank...what do i do then? guess i need to find out first before worrying about it.

Are you traveling with any amount of waste in the tank when this is occurring?

problem solved...maybe...maybe not.

the vent cap came off easy without disturbing any caulking....loosen screw and pull off.....so i stuck a hose down there and let it run for 3 minutes....pulled the handle on the black water tank....zero flow...now puzzled, pulled the gray water handle and out came 20 gallons.
put more water down vent pipe...checked gauges inside....sure nuff gray water tank filling.
so vent pipe not connected to black tank....guess the black tank flush opening is the vent....that's why my cap comes off going down the road.
factory plan it this way...who knows...but i aint gonna worry bout it any more.
which makes me think that people that get nasty smells in the bathroom are plumbed the same way but their flush cap not blowing off like mine.

Could the labels be backwards for the the tanks? My last unit had the black and grey tanks labeled backwards.

I'm guessing both tanks are vented to the same terminal. Down inside the hollow wall the black vent will lateral into the gray, explaining why your hose filled the gray tank, water always falls straight. The black tank drains with 3" connections, gray and vents are 1.5".
