Blast of cold water when showering

We have a FR wildcat 2006 model. When having a shower and shutting off the shower while soaping up , when i turn it back on I get a good shot of cold water. I thought maybe it was the bypass valve leaking but am not so sure . Its not the water in the lines cooling off its cold water. Anybody else have this problem

I don't know why, but the same happens/happened in every RV I've owned. I'm used to it now.

I've seen this before and attributed it to the DW doing dishes when I'm in the shower!

When you turn off the shower head, does water continue to trickle out? It should - that is how the temp is maintained at the head when you "pause" the output. If not, then maybe try another shower head that trickles when off.

Every RV I've ever owned where the OEM shower head COMPLETELY shut off with the shower head button did this, although some were blasts of hot water. I had replaced one shower head with an aftermarket that left a small trickle run when shut off and it did better but not perfect and I was never happy about the water wasted on the trickle when boondocking.

My family has learned to simply hold the washcloth over the end of the shower head for a few seconds after turning the head back on, to divert the cold or hot blast.

It's me.

I've been screwing with your outside showers.

I won't do it anymore.

I have the same issue in all the TTs I've owned, even with the OEM shower head replaced and letting it trickle. I did see somewhere a mod (maybe on Keystone forum) where someone modified the shower so a check valve is on the hot water line close to handles.
I remember the person saying what was happening is that the incoming water pressure on the cold water side was higher than on the hot water side so the cold water would push the hot water back towards the hot water tank when shower head shut off. This cold water is the burst of cold water you get when you turn the shower head back on.

Found it, here's the link: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/sho...ght=cold+water

If your shower head shuts off completely, the cold water side is at a slightly higher pressure than the hot water side, due to increased pressure drops in the water heater and valving (and - usually - additional length of PEX) on the hot water side. So when you turn off the shower head, but the hot and cold water valves are still open, some cold water backflows into the hot water line until the pressures equalize. Then when you re-open the shower head, you get cold water from both sides until the hot water reaches the faucet. A shower head valve that doesn't completely shut off should prevent this.

Well I did change the shower head to a better one that shuts off completely so I think I will put the old one back on and maybe see if i can put a check valve on the hot water side later on. Thanks its an easy fix then because it is so annoying to get that blast of cold water.

Both shower heads that I have used, give the cold blast, both trickle. There is a thread on this forum explaining how to go about fixing this. I don't know where it is at but it is on here somewhere. I know it is not as simple as installing a check valve.

I resolved that problem and the problem of wasting water while adjusting the temp by replacing the shower valve wit a temperature controlled valve similar to the ones found on a ship or in almost every country except the US and perhaps Canada. Set the temp once and forget it. Cost $50 on ebay and took me 2 hours labor to install.

My two newer motorhomes (2010 and 2016) emit hot water, not cold water, after turning off the sprayer. Simple solution either way - point the sprayer away from yourself 2 or 3 seconds when turning it back on.

Can't seem to copy the link to the forum. Go to ebay and search for "Rozin wall mount brass thermostatic shower valve"

shower heads

I used to get a hot blast. I found that if I backed the hot valve to a slightly lower setting before I adjusted the cold water to get the right temp it did not do that anymore and I could not tell the difference in the total pressure during the shower. If you can't fix it by that method pointing the shower head to the side when restarting is cheap and quick.

As a boondocker water conservation is important. I spray the water into a bowl I keep in the shower to help with the rinse. If I can't use the water in the shower, it goes into the toilet bowl to flush.

I think in fact there is not much you can do about the "differential temp blast" because the hot side of the "circuit" is longer than the cold side of the "circuit" -- the pressure being equal then you're going to typically get a cold blast.

It's just the way it works. Point the shower head away from you and let it rip. I lather up really quick to lessen the effect of the freeze.
