Bleaching/Sanitizing RV System

I bought a brand new Coachmen 292BHDS last August. I winterized it myself, and plan on de-winterizing and sanitizing the system myself.

My question is, when running the bleach through the RV water system, do I bypass the water heater, and only run it through the hot and cold lines, OR can I run the bleach mix through the water heater????

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone

Since I already have a full tank of water, I go on and run mine through the water heater, also. But, to thoroughly flush the water heater, you need to drain it after the bleach wash......just flushing it with fresh water won't hack it.

Do you use household bleach? If so; how much?

Has anyone used this Thetford Sanitizer?: Thetford Fresh Water Tank Sanitizer - Thetford 36662 - Fresheners & Softeners - Camping World

The hw heater should still be bypassed from winterizing .
Flush system with bleach and un- bypass hw heater after you fully flushed system.

I use 1 full cup of bleach in my 40 gallon fresh tank. I run everything till all pink is gone and I smell chlorine at the tap. Let sit 24 hours and then flush out with city water (chlorinated).

Secret for EASY filling of fresh tank.

Connect hose to hose bib. Connect ON/OFF VALVE at hose OTHER end.

Fill HOSE with 1 cup bleach and close valve.

Open hose bib valve and put hose into fresh tank. SLOWLY, open valve on end.

Water will push bleach into tank and dilute as the water runs. Starts out very strong and will break up any crud on the bottom of your fresh water tank.

Don't forget to flush out the pink in city water inlet check valve and outside shower hose.

Since your system is new, it is likely not necessary to even think about cleaning the hot water tank. This should have been bypassed during your winterizing. I recently dewinterized my new RV this past December and per the recommendations of the manual, I sanitized my tank and plumbing before even turning the hot water heater by-pass valve back to on. The manual also recommends a bleach solution of 1/4 cup to 15 gallons of water (3/4 cup total for 40 gal tank). I have seen recommendations for cleaning out hot water tanks with bleach if they are smelly (even after replacing the anode) so it doesn't seem that it would cause any problems to your tank if you wanted to run bleach through it but I really don't know that for sure. I didn't bleach mine
