Check Valve Between City Water And Fresh Water Tank

Last outing in my 2014 Surveyor SC 189 I was connected to city water and noticed that my fresh water tank inlet was leaking water out of its fill vent. I concluded that there must be a check valve stuck open somewhere between the city water inlet line and the fresh water tank outlet.

Can anyone confirm this is a logical possibility? And where might I find this check valve? Anything else to consider as a cause for this problem?

Confirmed! It is in the water pump. You can also put another one in just down stream of the pump.

This occurs every once in a while weather new or old. Turn off city water then run water pump with faucet open. Turn off pump then turn city water back on. Should reset check vale may take a couple of times to clear. Later RJD

If you do as aceinspp says and still have the problem you can put in the inline check valve, I suggest you put it in UPstream of the water pump. That is to say on the inlet side of the pump. if the pump is leaking back a bit and the check valve is on the outlet side of the pump and you are using the water tank and pump the water pressure on the pump will leak back into the tank and the water pump will kick on for a very short burst (about 1/2 second) then turn off again. It will do this repeatedly until you move the check valve to then inlet side of the pump. And yes, you can ask me how I know but I think you already have that figured out.

It is an often discussed topic with hundreds of prior posts about this.

The check valve is built into the pump's head.
Also, make sure you are using a regulator when on city water as high pressure can/will overcome the check valve.
And... do not use the on-board pump when on city water as pump cycling can cause the check valve to open.

There is another possibility that will fill the fresh tank when on city water and that is if you have a Showermiser valve in your shower. It is designed to return water back to the fresh tank (waiting for the hot to get there) instead of running it down the drain when boondocking but it returns the water to the fresh tank even when on city water. Setting the Showermiser valve to the correct position will keep it from filling the fresh tank although, there have been posts where folks use that option to actually fill the fresh tank when needed.

If you can't resolve the check valve leak back by operating the pump a few times, check valves can be replaced. But frankly, pumps are too cheap to be messing with check valves. More than likely you have a ShurFlo that will cost you all of $72 to replace entirely, and it's a very easy swap. In your 10 years old rig, this is a good investment anyway.

Yea the pump has been replaced a couple of years ago. I've ordered a new check valve on Amazon and will try that first. Thanks

When using city water, a pressure regulator is a MUST have item. It should be first in line, followed by an in-line filter, one of those blue things about a foot long and then your hose to the city water inlet on your RV.

And anytime when using city water, DO NOT have the freshwater internal pump ON.

The city water leaking back into the freshwater tank is caused by trash in the check valve or a faulty check valve inside the water pump.
