Flushing water heater

I'm wanting to flush deposits out of the water heater. I have the anode pulled, city water hooked up, turned on and all faucets turned off, so can someone tell why no water is coming out of anode fitting.

Is your WH bi-pass valve turned on?

I believe you'd be better off flushing the deposits through the anode rod hole with a a jet type nozzle on your garden hose....

I'd guess you have your valves set to winterizing configuration or at least one of them. One of those valves keeps water from going into the heater.

That said, I agree with SidecarFlip. Flush with water going into the anode port.

Dan & Marty here, too!

WH bypassed. Most people flush the WH via the anode rod. There are some inexpensive spray wands to stick in the anode rod hole and spray the inside of the tank. The advantage of this is little or no crud gets in your water lines to clog faucets.

What I did with mine this fall is I pulled the anode rod and tool my pressure washer with a narrow nozzle and stuck it in the anode hole. That cleaned it right out, right now.

I guess the anode rod flakes off and winds up on the bottom of the tank....

Got a new rod from Amazon too.

You need one of these, made by camco. You can get them from Amazon, any camper dealer or even Home Depot (less than $7). P/N 11691

When you order your anode rod, get two. They are inexpensive and that way next time you need one you don't have to wait or make a special trip to a dealer.

A used Washing machine water hose cut in 1/2 "they are Free from any Appliance dealer" inserted in the A-Rod hole will "Whip around inside the W/H tank and flush out the White Crud" Just attach to garden hose,a large bottle brush helps at the same time! PS give the other 1/2 of hose to a RV buddy! Youroo!!

Stupid newb question - why does the WH need flushing? What gets in there that shouldn't be there? Calcium deposits? Sacrificial bits of the a-rod?

The first time you drain your WH you will know what gets in there. Yes, it's basically calcium and other mineral deposits. I just drain mine, then stick my garden spray nozzle up to the hole and shoot the water in until it won't go in anymore, then let drain again. I do this a few times. So far, I have not felt the need to do more.

Others use the wand as discussed in the posts above.

Some people actually put 3-4 gal of vinegar in and turn it on for a few hours. This dissolves a lot of the crud. If you google "RV water heater vinegar," there are some videos of this out there.

What you do may depend on how much you use your TT and what you think the quality of the water you're using is.

Your next newb question will be "I can't get my kitchen faucet to work" and the repair will be clean the crud from the WH out of the aerator on the faucet.
