Gray/Black tank leak

I'm new to emptying RV tanks so I am not sure what to make of this....

I emptied the RV twice this week for the first time. On both occasions when I took the cap of the empty port (empties both gray and black tanks) there was a small amount of water that immediately poured out. The black and gray valves are approx. 4 inches behind the cover and there was maybe 1/2 cup of water in between the valves and the cover.

Is this normal? Should there be zero water in there? Is a small amount of water to be expected? I guess I was expecting nothing to be there so I was surprised (but I did have gloves on, yah!!). Or do I have a valve leak I should concern myself with?

Thank you all for the input!!

You might have a small leak at one of the valves. Sometime toilet paper or other debris can cause the valves to not shut tightly.

If it is a small amount I would see if it gets worse.

What I use and you should too is a secondary valve. You never know when there may be a surprise behind that cap. Install one of these and don’t open until you have your seeer hose connected.

It's not normal but it happens. Some people put a small bucket under the valve to catch anything that leaks past the valve. Others (like us) use the Valterra valve.

Ours tends to leak as we travel down the road and the Valterra valve catches anything that may make it past the seals. Some valves are easily replaced but ours would take someone with a lift to raise our van so we're ok with not having it repaired and using the twist on valve.
