Are both electric and propane switches turned off? Yes WH is really hot by design to give you longer lasting hot water before it goes cold.

Which switch do you have off the one inside the unit or the one on the water heater behind the outside cover. If you are on electric and the switch is on that is found inside the water heater outside cover in the lower left hand corner you will get hot water. this is the switch that controls the electric heat element. The switch inside the unit controls the gas side of the water heater. when you are boon docking or also want to heat the water faster while showers are being taken. If you do not want hot water then both switches need to be in the off position. If they are in the off position then one of the switches is bad.

X2 on what Rich has pointed out. It's highly likely you have the electric heating element switch turned on unbeknownst to you.....if you have a Suburban brand water heater.
Here is a FAQ on it, and where to find the electric switch. You will want to make sure it is off, before draining the water, or you will burn up the electric element if ever connected to a form of 120 volt shore power. It's all explained in the link below:

X3....the electric heater must be turned on, otherwise how could it possibly happen...only one way that water can get hot..there has to be a switch on that you are not aware of.

If yours does not have a pin (most do not); it is a great visual that it is OFF.

Campers DIE for more hot water. I'd sell it.

If water heater comes on with inside switch off check switch and wiring. You can also pull the water heater fuse to verify.

Hot water all the time
The switch inside on the panel is off. We are in the middle of a forest so no hookups. The switch outside is on....should it be off?

When switch outside is on, 110V AC is going to the electrical heating element. It will heat the water when it is on (and burn out if you turn it on without water in the heater). Turn off if you do not need/want hot water. The heater tank will hold heat for quite awhile when not drawing off of it.

I keep it off unless I specificly want hot water from it, this way it doesn't get forgotten. You indicated being in the woods with no hookups, If you are running a generator feeding power to your unit then you are heating the water with 110v when the outside switch is on.

Well, "on" means on and "off" means off so if you want the water heater off the switch should be "off" and if you want the water heater on you should switch it to "on".
The inside panel switch is for propane and the switch outside is for electric.
Do you want the water heater off? Switch it to off.

Are you running a generator?
What are you doing for electricity - since you say you have no hookups?
