Question Hot water drain plug

I went( 30 miles one way )out to the storage lot to drain my hot water heater, taking a 15/16 th and a 7/8 th socket. Both Too Small. I was surprised as that has covered it in many prior RV;s This is a new FR 36 foot tow, could anyone tell me the correct size socket to remove the plug/annoyed rod in order to drain the hot water heater tank
Thank You.
Wayne

To my memory I think it's 1-1/8 or 1-1/16 socket

I bought a cheap chinese spare that stays in my camper, never look at the size. That way my good set stays whole.

WH drain plug socket size.

I use a 10 inch adjustable wrench, fits ever time.

This. Don't forget the extension, really hard to impossible otherwise. You can use an adjustable wrench, but a socket is a whole lot easier. Also, make sure you've opened a faucet in the camper and depressurized the system first. Ask me how I know...

plastic plugs

Outer edges are really too soft so it may strip too easily and have to get the socket on it just right

Pipe threads seal by the use of tapered threads.
If you are tightening a plastic pipe plug to the point you strip the outer edges, you are tightening too tight.

The plastic plug threads will seal well enough long before you'd strip the plug.

I used a 3/4” steel ball valve. Allows me to drain the tank without getting hit with hot water and can attach a drain hose if it want.

Drain Them Rusty HWH.

Yeppers, you need a 1 - 1/16 socket, an extension, if this is the first time you may need a breaker bar instead of a ratchet and when you reinstall for the winter, after it drains of course, hand tight only. Just tight enough to block the hole. Spring time do not forget to remove plug, apply rector seal, and then tighten enough to stop it from leaking.
