I can't believe I...

First trip for the year. Figured I would dewinterize at the campground. Fill my water tank with water at site, asked my wife to start turning on faucets to get the water running. She's telling me no water is coming out, but I hear the pump running.

I forgot I disconnected the waterline to the pump and took off the pump screen. No issue, a little water in the pass through. Connected everything up, turned on the pump. I could hear water running and then my wife yelling to turn off the water! I ran inside to turn the pump off and she is in our bedroom. There are no water faucets in our bedroom?

Oh me, the washer lines! I left them open over winter to make sure all of the water drained out.

Not too big of a problem, maybe a gallon or two of water in the closet. Good thing we live in Denver, it was bone dry in a couple of hours. I hope they used marine grade plywood like they said they did.

I guess I need to add "close washer lines" to my checklist. Or just close them after I blow out all my water lines.

Live and learn.

I have a habit even during camping season that before I turn on the water I check to make sure the faucets are all off, call me paranoid!!!!

Is it wrong that I'm chuckling? I can totally see me doing both of these!

I would not disconnect any water lines to winterize. You should be able to do a good job with everything connected.

Washing machines are notorious for difficulty in winterizing. You can, however, pump antifreeze through them and make sure the pump sees enough antifreeze to force out all the water.

wish my cottage had a water pump and antifreeze intake, but then there is a lot of waterline to fill.

I had left the kitchen faucet open and when I hooked up to city water, of course it started to flow - right on top of the cover over the sink. Made a nice little mess

Denver is very dry, as in not humid, so things dry out faster than in places like Florida.

Thank you for posting - I thought I was the only one to make mistakes. “Oops” came from our Pop up when I cranked the emergency brake cable up into the mechanism and didn’t notice it. Pulled it home that way too. But at least I learned how to replace brake assemblies and bearings lol DW just grinned...

That is how I found out I had a busted line under the kitchen sink after the winter months, I was standing out side and couldn't figure out why I had water running out of the camper wall, then it dawned on me, I have a problem. The DW will sometimes say I am a little slow.

Thanks for sharing your opps! Just added to our dewinterizing checklist to check the washer faucets. My wife can't remember if she closed them or not after winteriation.

Winterizing Washer

Pour about 1/2 to 1 quart of RV antifreeze into tub. Run short spin/drain cycle to fill pump.
Should be good to go.
I have a washer in a place that gets down to -30 F in the winter.
Haven't had a problem yet.

Even though we do get snow in Denver, not much this year, it is a high altitude desert. It is typically 40-50% humidity.

Thanks for the info about winterizing the washer, we don't have one, yet. I also don't use antifreeze to winteri
ze my water lines, I just blow them out and leave all of the drain lines open. I think next time I will close them after a couple of days draining and drying.

Before we had a washer I used to winterize from the washer hookups back seeing they were the highest point everything blew down and I kept the low point drains open, I would close them to do each faucet also.

Thanks

There are so many ways to do things wrong on an RV. Glad to see you have entered the competition!

Maybe the forum needs a RV Darwin Awards section?

Looks like the plan to dewinterize at the camp ground does not allow a sanitation step for the fresh water system...
