In a rush....left the water pump on

Was in a rush to dump the tanks on the way out after using fresh water tank for a week. When I left with no water in the fresh water tank I forgot to shut the water pump off. After a 5 hr drive back home I went into the TT to unload and heard it still running. Dang! Been camping with a TT for 15+ yrs and just forgot.

Should I just assume it's probably trashed or is there hope it will work ok? Pump is Pentair Shurflo 4008. This happened yesterday and haven't had a chance to re-visit it yet.

I had a similar brain fart. Decided to drain my water tank on the way home for a trip to avoid the sulfur smell from well water sitting in the tank until next trip. Opened the tank drain, and forgot to turn off the pump.

Noticed pump was on when I got home (6 hours). Turned it off, put water in tank, turned pump on. Nothing. Motor would run but no pumping. Replaced pump, worked good. Stern reminder to self to turn pump off whenever trailering. I have since learned to dump water pressure in addition to turning pump off before trailering.

Hopefully didn't burn up pump, but that is a long time. Good news is a replacement pump is reasonable price and easy to find.

I'll try to fill the fresh water tank tonight and see what happens with the pump and report back. Hopefully it still works.

It might...but, you'll always wonder if it may be wounded and potentially quit in midst of a future camping trip. Prob good idea to replace(?). If it's like mine, it's in a spot that requires a lot of fussin and cussin to get to...but may be worth it.

According to the manual and website that's a 'Run-Dry' pump, so I guess you'll see how good their marketing is.

Filled the fresh water tank...turned on the pump and it filled the hot water tank completely and had regular pressure in the faucets so seems to have survived. But to Apex's point, I think I'm going to buy a replacement to keep on hand.......which means it will now last forever. Otherwise if I don't, it will crap out on me on our next trip. Thanks everyone!

You can always set up the spare pump to do water transfers to your RV at dry parks. Lots of nice threads on that. This way you get to test it too, make sure it's good while still under warranty!

I moved my switch to a more logical location but in a rare blue moon it is easy to bump the switch and tun on the pump. The rare blue moon happened once in 12 years and burned ours up. Now part of my going home procedures is to take the fuse out of the power wire to the pump. Pump is easy to access.

I've let mine run dry several times. The first time was a few hours about 5 years ago
The last time was almost 24 hours about two years ago. Still works perfect. I quit worrying about it

I bet your pump is fine.
I've left mine on more than once.

I think buying a new pump and putting it in the trailer storage compartment is THE BEST WAY to insure that your current pump will last forever. And, you can sell the new one in 20 years for double the money!

When these pumps go bad it’s usually the diaphragm which is very
easy to replace so rather then buy the whole pump just keep a spare diaphragm…

You are absolutely correct. But if it is the original pump, I would just as soon replace it with an upgrade. You can usually get a lot of improvement for not much money. And then I might get an extra diaphragm for the new pump
