Indicator light for Electric Element on Water Heater

Since the operation of the Suburban water heater can be electric or gas but there is no easy way to tell I've added an indicator light to my system. I found a 120v LED and hooked it to the water heater element. Made a little bracket from some scrap and used an existing screw. Can easily tell now if the element is on or off.

Just curious. Why didn't you just swap out the existing switch with an illuminated one?

There are three answers.
1)A previous post complained getting the switch out was tough and the wires to the switch are so short it was a major hassle to get the new switch in. This was cheaper and easier. (yes, I know it goes out when the thermostat kicks off)
2) I've had two lighted switches burn out (on a boat and on a van). Less chance of that.
3) I can see the light. I can't see the switch.
