Remove pressure from the system (turn off pump or disconnect city water & open another faucet)
Use a small screwdriver to push in on the center pin in the disconnect. They get corroded up and stick sometimes.

I have had the same problem. When I take off the pressure from the system, I can connect it. Just have to remember now that I always connect the hose first, then the city water connection...

I had a really hard time getting mine connected the first time. Once I got it connected it would not come off. I finally untwisted the entire fitting, took it in to the vice, and worked on it with pliers. In the end I got it out, but had the same problem trying to re-insert it. I used a wire wheel on the hose (male) fitting, and used some lubricant in the whole thing, and everything works as it should now. I'm guessing it had a burr on it or something.

If I remember right you don't have to push the collar in to insert the hose fitting, but of course you do to release it. Also, I think pushing in on the fitting while trying to push the collar in makes it easier to release.

I'm looking for another fitting like that to make a little spigot (no hose) but I have no idea where to find that. I haven't tried a propane quick disconnect, but I'd assume it is different from that. I saw a few fittings on Amazon that might be close.
