Reinstall anode rod/suburban hot water

Replaced anode rod. Cleaned threads of tank which are still a little rusty.Put tape on rod and used a 1 an 1/2 inch socket. It's a tight fit. HOW FAR do I need to screw it. It won't screw in all the way. Thanks!

If you noticed when you removed it (did you remove it or have someone do it?)
there are always some threads showing. If everything’s in place and threaded snug to tight, there will be threads showing but no leaks when in use.

Ken, I took the rod out after season and winterizing. There are threads showing and it is snug. Thanks for the info.

You're probably good. Fill it with water, and see if it leaks. If not, hooty hoot!

Mine only goes in about 1/2 the threads. It doesn’t have to be that tight.
There is a spec if you really want to know.

Do not over tighten. That material is pretty thin.

You can get a cheap tap on Amazon for $10 to clean the threads

If you have a small leak just tighten it a little more. You said you used a 1-1/2" socket, the actual size is 1-1/16".

The anode has tapered pipe threads. It just screws in enough for the taper to seal. The Teflon tape or other makes up the minute difference that could leak.

You will have exposed threads visible.

the anode is 1 1/16 hex and the threads are pipe threads meaning it's a tapered thread smaller a at from and getting larger towards the hex. Put some teflon tape on the thread and tighten until snug. should leave 3-4 threads showing. Check for leak and gently tighten if leaking

For tapered pipe threads I was taught that you wrap it with Teflon tape, or coat it with pipe dope, snug it up then go 1/6th of a turn. If your threads are in good condition it should seal.

Only Until It’s Tight Enough

NPT threads are tapered and should never be “buried” into a fitting. You tighten whatever it is you are tightening until it is “tight enough” to not leak. If you go too far, you can split the hub of whatever fitting you are screwing into. You can also cause the fitting to expand enough to where the next time you thread something into it, you won’t be able to get it tight enough to where it won’t leak. There are specific torque measurement ranges for the various sizes of NPT threads, but “tight enough” is what you are looking for. As a plumber, I have a built-in torque range indicator from my hands to my shoulders that tells me when it is tight enough and it very rarely fails me.

DON’T OVER-TIGHTEN IT

Bruce
