Sink Stopper

I have an REI 27. The sink stopper is just a cylindrically shaped item with a stopper at the top. It lays in the sink. You insert it into the drain so it will stop water. Looks like there is no way to position the the stopper in the drain and still let water out. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

If yours is like mine you can set it into the drain and it will sit so water will drain. You need to push it down snug for it to hold water in the sink.
