Suburban Water Heater Thermostat Replacement

The 120V Tstat/switch electric thermostat on my 10 gallon Suburban needs to be replaced as it is confirmed blown. Is there a 130/140 degree Rheems or Camco household equivalent thermostat for a 1500 watt Camco coil? It would be great to start buying thermostats at the local hardware than driving 60 miles to get the Suburban 520788 120V switches at premium cost. Water heater is hooked up to non-mobile 120V household electric. Thanks!

I am 99 percent sure they don't sell Suburban thermostats at Lowes or Home Depot, so you must be purchasing an equivalent. HD sells Rheems and Everbilt thermostats: I will call their tech today. Thanks!!!!

Those thermostats and simple snap switch types, so if the units that Lowes or HD sells will physically fit in the space, they will control the element of the heater.

I looked at the Everbilt unit and if it fits the existing space, it will work.

A Suburban thermostat is a combination unit. It has a thermostat and also a Hi-limit/Emergency Cut Off (ECO) part, connected together via a fusible link. If any of the parts in the assembly go bad, you replace the entire assembly.

Here is a pic of the ECO/Thermostat assemblies, with the fusible link visibly burned out between the ECO and Thermostat for the 120 volt AC electric.

The resettable hi-limit performs a different function than the thermostat, and you must have it..... so I would make sure you replace your Hi-limit/ECO thermostat assembly with an exact equivalent.

I called Rheem tech and their Rheem Protech Marathon thermostat will directly replace the Suburban, has a lower hi-limit/eco safety (170 than 180); has variable temperature control; and is way less expensive. Probably a more durable thermostat. Sounds like a good way to go.

The critical question is wmtire's Hi Limit/ECO topic. I know there is a Hi-Limit but there may not be a reset. In ten years, I have never been able to reset any of my Suburban thermostats - never seems to have any effect; more importantly, a Hi-Limit/Emergency Cutoff switch is a safety issue and that is of concern.

The current Suburban is blown and black. It may be simplest and safest to replace with another Suburban. I am looking at the Rheem or Everbilt as a viable alternative. I will call Everbilt to confirm the Hi Limit/ECO. Thanks for the feedback!

PS: Just recalled Rheem and there is an ECO of 170 degrees and a reset button. So its just a matter of whether the thermostat fits as Bama Rambler said. Thanks!!!
