Don't know what toilet you have, but most have a rubber seal that dries out over time. Either replace it, or try some plumbers silicone faucet grease on the rubber seal.

You can also use some vaseline in a pinch.

You could, but petroleum products will damage rubber products. Silicone products are always recommended for rubber.

Another thought. If you are going to coat the sealing surface with plumbers grease, first, clean the bottom of the seal (the sealing surface) as well as you can. I usually use a wet paper towel with Dawn.
Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

Don't rule out just cleaning it. Mine was dry this morning and I just leave enough in to cover the bottom.

Thru some vinegar in it to knock a little hard water deposits off although they were minor.

Cleaned the toilet and ran the brush past the seal a couple of times.
Holding water now. Think a piece of crud just was keeping the seal up some.

I replaced the rubber seal last year. Took about 5 minutes. Link:

I got a 2 pack of seals off Amazon. I don't have a link but this is what I ordered for our Dometic toilet.
