Tub/Shower surround required or not?

The DW and I went to check out a new 2014 Cherokee 284BH and we are very happy that the unit seems to tick all the boxes for our needs. However we noticed the shower/tub surround was not in the unit. We assumed that the surround was a requirement to protect the wall. We asked the salesman and the service manager if the surround was a requirement or if they could install one for us. Of course they could for $750. Both stated that they have never had a unit to come in with damage to the walls where water penetrated or damaged the wall. I just really want to know if the surround is just decorative or is it really needed for protection?

Thanks for any advice.

HC

Had a 28BH for close to 2 years and over 80nights with lots of showers.. No surround, no problems. I did recaulk the corners once though.

Well we picked up the 284BH Friday. I did not see any caulk in the corners, should I put a bead? HC

Ours was a small clear bead of silicone or a similar caulking. I would check with your dealer first, but yes, I'd put a bead in the vertical corners.

Thanks I will look a little closer and see if I can see a clear bead. The dealer's parts and repair guy said it looked fine but they won't pay for repairs down the road. HC
