Turning off water heater but leave gas in for fridge

I shut off the switch for the water heater on a 351-thss, but realized that it just switched to propane. If I want to drain the fresh water tank but leave the fridge on, and not burn up the water heater, how do I go about it?

The manual says shut off the gas, but then I can't travel and keep the fridge cool with empty water tanks.

Thanks!
Mark

What brand is the WH? Atwood or Suburban? If it is a Suburban there should be a inside switch on or near the water pump switch. That switch is for propane, make sure it is turned off. The switch for the electric element is on the outside in the lower left hand corner, a very small toggle switch. Some RV's have a switch for electric on the inside also. I'm not familiar with the Toy Hauler you have so maybe someone has an identical RV that can give you help.

You don't say what make/model water heater you have but if it's a Suburban, it's probably an SW6D__ model. On these models, the gas side is controlled by a switch inside the camper, usually on the "control panel" where your tank levels, lights and water pump switches are located.

The electric side is controlled by a switch on the outside of the water heater. You have to open the outside panel to see it.

If your model # has an "L" in it, then your electric side is controlled by a switch on the control panel (i.e., in this case, you'd have a "gas" switch and an "electric" switch on your control panel). They may be on a single panel like this one:

Finally, turning electric OFF does not turn propane ON, or vice-versa. The two are totally independent. You can have either one on, both on, or both off.

I've attached some docs for the Suburban without the "L" (i.e, no inside switch for electric).

Thanks for the responses, I didn't realize there was a switch outside, but indeed it's there. So, I have a switch inside and outside, and it's a Suburban. Not 100% sure which model, but it doesn't have a pilot light.

Took and uploaded the pictures on my phone, so they ended up sideways, sorry .

You must have an iPhone (sideways pics).

OK, you have what I expected. Gas is turned on/off with the switch on your control panel and electric is turned on/off with the outside switch. DO NOT turn on the electric unless you're absolutely sure the heater is full of water or the element will burn out in seconds. Open the pressure relief valve with the little lever and make sure you get water out of it.

The gas switch probably has a "DSI" (Direct Spark Ignition) light inside of it. The unit will attempt to light 3 times. If the unit fails to light in the switch light will come on and stay on.
