Question Calgon and Dawn?

Saw a number of folks post about using Calgon and Dawn in their black water tanks. Are we talking about Calgon for bathing ("Calgon, take me away") and how much Calgon and how much Dawn? I love the idea of putting a bag of ice down there to help bust things up.

Cleaning bw tank

I have never heard of this before. Tell me about Calgon and dawn. I usually just use bleach to clean and sanitize the tank when we get home.

There’s a gazillion threads on here about this. Search “Geo Method” and you will see.

Calgon and Dawn

I believe the posters are referring to the GEO method.
Our friend swears by it.
My DH is stubborn to a fault. If I make the suggestion he doesn't act upon it. If he reads or watches a video, oh, yeah..let's do this.

Calgon has been hard to find here during this pandemic, but I scored a small bottle and put the suggested solution into our black tank.

We will be leaving ina few days and will dump before hooking up to site.
I may eat crow.

We never leave more than a gallon of water with our chemical. Our black tank sensors show 2/3 full even after dumpling.

Calgon water softener is what you use for GEO

Calgon water softener. It makes the water more slippery. Dawn or liquid laundry detergent. A cap full or two. Full toilet bowl of water. I use laundry detergent. A cap full of RV digest-it. I do have Happy Camper but haven't used it yet. Look up the Geo Method.

Be careful. Once you are “installed”, if you are found to be “not working correctly”, you will be “fixed”!

If it is only a little bit I might let out in a bucket and dump in house toilet.

A32Duece,
What would be the amount each of Calgon and Dawn to treat a 32 gallon black tank?

I never measure, justmix in the bowl and dump in the tank. About 5 gal. water in the tank and a cup of each in the bowl, mix and flush.
3 hour ride home does pretty good. Usually dump back at a CG.

I use about a cup of dawn and a capful of Calgon and one bleach pod. 4 years and never once had a black tank problem.

Mule Team Borax is a fine substitute for Calgon which is no longer available in Canada.

We do the same thing. After flushing the tank when we leave the campground we add Happy Camper as recommended. That is all it takes. Happy Camper is "nine trace elements and two heavy elements that make up a highly concentrated blend of minerals and micronutrients. In layman terms, it is the good bacteria doing away with bad bacteria to eliminate odor and accelerate the natural decomposition of the waste. It has the ability to work longer and stay odor free in over 100° temperatures. All of this and it is still friendly to all holding tank systems and the environment!"

See the Happy Camper site for more info. Buy it on Amazon.

We have used Happy Camper for 15 years and been well pleased. The small amount you use makes a tub of it last for years. We used to do the whole geo thing with dawn and calgon, but this is cheaper, easier and better for the septic systems you dump into.
