Don't you mean clockwise?
Only if your underneath the canister looking up at it then it would counterclockwise.
From the side which is how they'll be looking at it would be clockwise.

I think the normal convention for which way to turn an object is to look at it from the spinning part's perspective. In this case, looking up, turn counter-clockwise. However, if you look down at the filter from above, it would be spin the canister clockwise.


Below is a link showing how to unspin a filter. There are many of these available so look at a few to get a better handle on this.
