Water filter:bypass or remove?

I have a Rockwood Mini Lite 2304 with inline water filter. I usually use an external filter on the city water or the fresh water inlets. The Rockwood filter is kind of redundant and a pain to remove for winterizing. Should I remove the filter or keep it and put in a bypass? The inline setup uses 1/2 inch blue PEX lines. Removing the filter would be a negative should I sell the trailer down the road. What is needed to perform both options and where do find the parts needed?
Thanks.

A 1/2 threaded PVC coupler is what some have used, wrap the threads with a couple of loops of thread tape.

Remove the filter, put it in a box, store it for the next owner should there be one.

For about $5 you can also use a Sharkbite, readily available in any plumbing section of your hardware store...saves you from having to use a pex crimper. As far as it being a negative down the road should you sell it....I don't think it will make a difference, in fact the buyer might be happy you dealt with it and he/she won't have to. Many people don't want the inline filter. It's the first thing I modified and removed when I got our trailer home.

It doesn't leak and I don't use it so I just leave it alone.

I have a Cardinal. Our filter is right where I can easily twist if off and remove it for winterizing. I guess it isn't that easy for you. If I had the same situation, I'd bypass it, keeping the filter system in place. It doesn't take that much time to install a ball valve or something similar.

We also have the 2304 (KS model) I run the city water through a sediment pre filter before the inline filter. I completely agree with rbrak29 about what a pain it is to remove the filter for winterizing, or changing the filter.
So, I am curious about others thoughts and experiences with this ?

1st thing I do is purchase a filter and add it to the hose ~~ at the faucet. Always eliminate the in coach filter.

Filter Options

On my Roo the filter and water pump were right in the way of using the pass through for any good purpose so I removed the filter and moved the water pump next to the water heater. Like you I use an external filter so the factory one make little sense and was in the way. Pex fittings, tubing and compression rings can be purchased at home depot. The compression ring tool is cheaper on Amazon.

I also have a Roo with a cartridge filter that's installed in a floor cabinet underneath the front bed, but I also use an inline filter at the connection. I will be winterizing in a few weeks and will pull the cartridge filter. To me, no harm no foul - the water is double filtered. LOL!

I've exchanged a couple of PMs with SeaDog and am going to follow a suggestion he made about a mod he made on my TT. He pulled the filter and put in a 2 gallon pressure tank, fits in the same space. Lowers use of the pump, and keeps the pump from cycling on when using the toilet in the middle of the night. I spotted a pressure tank for about $45 at my nearby Menards. SeaDog reconfigured the filter and attaches it to the water lines outside the trailer.
Basically the tank is a mini version of the 50 gallon tank I have on my B&S well system.

Pull out the cartridge and refit the filter canister upside down to use as an accumulator. It will fill with air and cut down on the pump cutting in and out every time you flush or run a small amount of water. It will drain in the fall when you open the water drains. Works for me.

My Roo is hooked up to city water connection at the campground all the time, except when I winterize, obviously.

I like the fact it has 2 water filters, as the campground has well water

I really like this idea! What trailer do you have?

2002 Shamrock. Our other was a 2007 Micro-Lite. Same filter.

Those thinking of removing the inline filter or who advocate doing so might want to take a good look at this filter after 32 days of camping this year. (It was white to begin with.) In addition, there were 1-2 tablespoons of sand and silt similar in color to the filter that were sitting in the bottom of the filter canister:

Now here's the kicker to this story: all water that went into the RV was pre-filtered with an external inline filter - both on any city water line and whenever filling the fresh water tank. That external filter is sealed in white plastic and I haven't performed it's autopsy yet.

My house has well water. I don't have a filter. I've been drinking and bathing in it for 33 years. So I don't understand your point.

If as you say, ALL water that went into your RV was filtered and you got 1-2 tablespoons of crap and all that sediment in your secondary filter... I'd be looking for a better primary filter. It obviously does not work!

Probably the same primary (external) filter used by many of the same people who only use that, made by Culligan. You also may be assuming the water tank comes pristine from the factory. External filters only filter external incoming water, not what's in the tank.

Many more possibilities than mentioned and for all that and more we do not use CG or FW tank for drinking or food prep ~~ not even in the dogs water bowl.
