Water Filter For Dry Camping
Heading into the mountains for 10 days and need a way to utilize/filter creek water.
I have a 6 gallon water container with a spout that fits my water tank inlet. But I would like to filter the water or at least eliminate the larger debris that might cause a problem with the on-board strainer/pump and utilizing my supplied RV tube filter would be a bonus.
It would be great to always filter water before it goes in the fresh water tank. My trailer came with a separate filter to attach in-line for the city hookup and I realize I could also attach it to a hose for my fresh water tank when I am home or at a campsite with water. But my fresh water need is when I am already setup dry camping with access to good quality creek water.
I have seen others use large transfer pumps with 2-3” hose hauled down to a creek side, filling a large pickup tank--don’t need that kind of volume. Thinking of a hand pump or smaller 12 volt pump with filter to fill 6 gallons at a time into a transfer jug.
Anyone have a small portable pump/filter application?
My objective is not to store anything too bulky but a small device in one hand and a jug in the other is kind of what I imagine. Leaving in about 14 days so I will report back with any solutions (so to speak). Ha

Why not use one of the Camco type rv filters with a hose and a pump?

I’m heading that way, thanks Mokurt!
I have been noodling how best to do and the type of pump for a remote location. I believe a 12 volt pump and small battery (I have a portable Jackery which should work) along with the in-line rv filter like you thought too. Also need a strainer for the creek water side. I ordered some parts today from Amazon-should be together by Wednesday next week.

I looked at hand pumps but decided the 12 volt pump will do the work a little quicker. I had to make some quick decisions today on this-we’ll see if it works out. Thanks for your response, EddieL.

10 days so you don't need a whole lot of water, I don't even use four gallons a day with showering. Dish cleanup probably uses the most.
Any room and weight allowances in your truck for a water tank? May make things just a bit easier than running to the creek or a few less trips to it? No law the tank needs to filled full if space or weight is limited.

I think you are right on the water use-a full fresh water tank on my trailer will likely be enough because it’s just me for 10 days hunting. And it’s just dishes and maybe a couple showers-so maybe 30 gallons. I’m going to be close to a trailhead with a Forest Service latrine so just grey tank to disperse.
Unfortunately I will have a 8 hour haul to get there and don’t want the extra weight on-board. On other trips to this area I stop short at a wet BLM campground for a night and fill the fresh water tank. But all facilities like that within an hour are winterizing their water sources. So that’s why I decided to travel with 5 gallons and get the another 25 gallons from a creek (which is running cold and clean within 300 yards of where I set up). And as it turns out I will have an extra day to organize and do stuff like that ahead of the hunt.
Thanks, GolfingDave, for your response and the water blatter idea. Maybe the discussion will also help others with similar projects.

pumping water from a creek ... you need to look at some sort of sanitizing it
many areas you cant drink water cause of animal fecal matter
I would NOT contaminate my RV water system
clean and sterilize the water before it goes into the RV tank
saw a camping sterilizer 12v system in a suitcase
it contained filter PLUS UV sterilizer
I still would not put that into the tank... fill bottles or jerry cans
If the water is clean looking... BOIL IT and put in jerry cans
---------------------------------------------------------
plus 10 days is not too long .
practice less number of showers and keep showers short
use untreated creek (gallon milk jugs) water for toilet
boil water on stove for dish washing
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I won't drink my tank water anyways
always bring known good city water or buy from the store !

Thanks Aussieguy! I think those are excellent precautions.
Although I have been drinking unfiltered creek water in these mountains my whole life, the best advice is to be safe rather than sorry. Generally, the water quality at this source is better than the city tap. But still I plan to filter it. I would add that if you are not familiar with a water source or know the conditions that assure clean drinking water, always filter or boil, as you point out.

10 days of dry camping? Pumps and sterilizers? Where is all the "power" coming from? If your using "creek water" make sure you have a filter that removes ALL strains of bacteria and contaminants, or you could wind up with "beaver fever". Just sayin'.

If it makes any sense I might bring an empty bladder with you. Drive to your creek location after setting up the camper. Fill the bladder with any 12 volt pump but pre filter it before it gets to the pump. Otherwise depending on what pump you use the check valve in the pump could get clogged.
Drive your now full bladder back to the camp site and pump it into your tank with the same pump.
Put a once of chlorine in your tank to sanitize it.
The 12 volt power can come from your trucks battery and do it all in one trip.

Hey there DW. Actually. I won’t need much power. I will have a 12 volt frig which sips energy and solar panels that keep it neutral. I have 2 100 amp hour lithium batteries. And a Honda generator that I will run an hour every other night to bring my batteries back to full charge-40a lithium charger. I will use a the furnace to take the edge off- set for 50 degrees.
The filter for creek water will run on a Jackery battery pack which has a separate solar panel. I find the Jackery really convenient to recharge my devices between hunting trips and can use it for the pump/filter system I am building.
Thanks for your response.

That makes perfect sense and great suggestion. Thanks!

I gots solar... more than enough to power a pump for an a while while filling and sanitizing the water... you are NOT going to be pumping water 24/7
as long as you don't park in the dark mysterious jungles in the west... there should be enough solar power in most of the continental USA
Have not used shorepower or generator to charge 12v side since April
on the east coast as far north as Lake Superior and down to the everglades

It’s really nice to know YOU have solar… but the real question is — what does the OP have?
This thread is about Chuck754’s situation.

chuck has a camper he want to drycamp with for 10 days
hopefully he has one of the many options ... generator extra big battery or solar
either power source you won't be draining a battery for a long time to pumps some water
guess if he was real short on power he'll just have to use a bucket

The thing about solar is that you use electricity faster than you can make it. When you start adding the fridge, water pumps and lights, the watts start to add up. A good 10 hours of the day there won't be any solar generation. 10 days on solar is a lot different than a long weekend on solar.

Run your drinking water through a backpacking filter. You can use a pump or a gravity system. It makes no sense to try to sterilize 25 gallons of water to go in your RV tank. I don't drink out of my RV tank.
A 12v pump is a great idea. No big deal to add a strainer type filter to it.

Watching that happen right now. 9/22 was the last day my batteries were at 100%. This evening 40, 43 and 47 percent. Actually dropped a couple of points today during the day where even on overcast days they stay steady or rise a point or two. Rain and overcast days five days straight.
Been running a test with my converter turned off the last couple of months and have been waiting for a string of days like this.
May have to fire up my generator tomorrow just to see how it works if I was actually in a situation with no electricity.
