Water Filter Woes

The factory installed water filter on my FR Mini-Lite Rockwood 2506S requires the use of a KW1 type filter (for FR1 and RCS housings). The only difference in this type versus other water filters (from my observations) is the O-ringed top. My issue is, after lengthy searches on the internet, the cheapest filter I can find costs $28. Other than the O-ring, I can't see where this is any different than your standard water filter. Has anyone ever changed this out to use a regular filter (costs of $7 to $14 to replace cartridges)? Is the one installed something special for RVs? Thanks much!

When you pay 1/4 to 1/2 as much for a filter that's about the same reduction you can get in filtration.

I still use the KW1 filter and have no qualms using either city water or tank water for cooking or drinking.

A new filter once per year is no big deal to me. The cost is less than the price of one fancy cup of coffee from Starbucks per month (which I don't buy).
