Your better off asking with the make/model of the hot water heater then the camper. If you have an anode and not a plug I believe that's a Suburban hot water heater. Anode life depends on how often it's wet and quality of water. Suburban says to replace when it's 3/4 gone. Atwood's do not require a sacrificial anode.

This anode rod has been used 2 camping seasons, and has plenty of life left.

On a Suburban water heater, it takes a 1 and 1/16th inch socket for the anode rod/drain plug.
