That's like replacing your toothbrush every week. Sure it doesn't hurt anything and it doesn't cost that much each time, but it eventually adds up to a lot of wasted money.

anode rod

Our camper is over 2 years old and I remove and inspect the anode rod and wash the scale out of the water heater a couple of times per year, the anode still has about 25% left now so it is still good to go, camping trip in a few weeks.

Well considering about a third of it is gone at the end of the season it is worth it. And actually I do replace my toothbrush every few weeks as my daughter is a hygienist and they don’t cost me anything. Then the used ones get used for cleaning all my guns.
So it’s a win win as far as I’m concerned.

anode rod material?

I see Amazon has magnesium and aluminum/zinc anode rods. Is one material better than the other?

All Suburban brand water heaters comes factory equipped with a magnesium anode rod. The aluminum is an option if you are staying in places with water conditions that eat thru a magnesium anode too fast.

We keep links to 5 youtube videos in our FAQ subsection that Suburban actually sent to our forums. The very first video there is about the anode rod, and will explain the magnesium and aluminum options. Around the 1:25 time, Mark Polk explains the magnesium/aluminum anodes.
