Water Heater doesn't attempt to light on LP

Hello All!

I just purchased a used 2012 Surveyor Sport this past week. We went out for our first trip and found an issue with the Water Heater...I was hoping someone could help me troubleshoot.

I am having issues with my Suburban Water Heater SW6DE. The Electric switch on the outside tank heats properly, but we can't get the LP side to work. The On/Off switch inside my camper doesn't light up when switched to on-my understanding is it should when first turning on until the unit lights. No Attempt to ignite-No Clicking noise at all, no smell of Gas. Gas is working fine on the stove.

Do you have any advice on how to start troubleshooting?

There is a safety lock out that prevents it from trying to light if it has failed several times. This can occur if someone turned it on when there was no propane. To reset, pull the fuse for the 12V control power to the WH and wait 10 sec and reinstall. if you haven't used propane side of it before, run the stove for a few minutes to insure the air in the propane line is bled out.

Did you test the fuse to ensure that it was good when you pulled it? Sometimes they don't 'look' blown when they actually are.

Is the water in the heater hot when trying to fire the heater on gas? If it's hot enough, that will keep the gas side from firing.

Have you checked the Hi-Limit/Eco switch and thermostat to see if it's passing power? There's one for both the AC and DC side. It's under a cover in the heater compartment near the burner assembly.

Here's a troubleshooting guide if you don't already have one.

I would shut the electric off, turn on gas switch and use your hot water, if all is good it should fire up after a while....it will not turn on if water is already hot from electric side....

Thank you all. We were able to narrow it down to the hi limit/thermostat. Replaced that and all is right with the world.

Replaced or reset?

There is a reset button under the rubber covers. The rubber covers prevent corrosion and shocks from the AC thermostat (on the left; DC on the right).

Note the melted wire on the left AC thermostat in the photo.

OK. If it happens again, here is the place to buy a replacement:

Suburban RV Water Heater 12 Volt Thermostat 232282 | eBay

The other side is about the same price.

There is only one nut/ lock washer and the two terminal spades.
