WH Anode out or in?
Through the camping season I usually leave the annode rod out laying in the bottom of the WH frame. Do you install over winter or leave it out as I do?

I would drain it and then install the rod so it was ready to go in the spring. Would open the relief valve and place a couple cotton balls in the opening to stop any bugs or bees from entering in the spring.

In (all the time, actually) for me- my fear is the threads rusting up. Could be unfounded and others likely do it without issue- but it's what I do.

After draining and flushing the water heater I reinstall the anode rod. When it needs replacing I would install the new rod at that time also.

IN, as it keeps bug/critters from crawling inside the water heater..and also prevents the threads on the water heater from rusting up

Just put some copper anti seize on the threads. Besides sealing it and not being able to rust you get a better conductor then tape. I know you think i'm anel on this but it will work and you don't have to worry. Everyone has there own way....  ... This question has been debated to it's fullest extent.....

NO, I put a new one in every year after I done cleaning it. But that is just me and it is still in the by-pass mode now . The Copper anti seize doesn't enter the water system if you wondering that. As I said before this is the first year I ever winterized, but I still clean my tank yearly.

Well I guess I kinda answered you both. Even if you left the rod out I would think that someone would want to close that whole from bugs or anything. Just leaving it open would accelerate the rusting of the threads. From just the pure elements of winter. I guess that I assumed that people would know that. And I'm the first to say don't assume it the first 3 letters makes me an A** sometimes espendydad. Try it and see how it works for you.... PS: couldn't hurt to try. It's really better then tape or rectorseal that I have found.

I'm good with leaving it in, tape, and reusing my anode but the latter two have been  .

I would give the OP the benefit of the wording of the post, I'm sure he didn't mean he leaves it out during camping. Might just be missed worded. That does happen. Maybe he will get back to the post and and clear that up.
