It's the controller for the hot water heater.

Yup…it’s the controller. Best to not have it moving around much. Tape it down if there’s room.

It was dangling from a loose zip tie on the water heater with the wires squeezed between the water heater and the sofa frame. It is now screwed to the floor.

It is the module board for a Suburban water heater. It controls the function of the propane mode of heating.

They come loose like that from the manufacturer. It is up to the final installer where to mount/attach the module board after installation of the water heater . You may find them loose like yours was, screwed to nearby frame, or many times just stuck to the styrofoam insulation on the tank itself with double-sided adhesive tape.

One more thing, it is good that you know what/where this module board is located for future reference. These module boards can/do go bad and are easy to replace now that you know where yours is. This thread link below may help troubleshoot a module board problem in the future if you encounter your propane mode of heating not working correctly.

I am also going to edit your thread title somewhat

Screwed to the floor will certainly keep it from dangling loose... but... if you screwed it to the floor anywhere near where water from a tank leak or plumbing leak could pool on the floor, it will ruin the control board.

The factory sticks them to to top/side of the tank to keep them off the floor but the tape often doesn't stick for long. I've always used better tape or screwed them to a wall/upright support.
