Yes, I have wondered about this. Thank you for dissecting the Camco charcoal filter and sharing your findings … most revealing! I've been using one of these as a prefilter into my portable water-softener when filling from certain sources. I have taste-tested water before and after this filter with satisfaction that the filter does improve water flavor. Camco advertises this “One Filter Per Camping Season” product as a “granular Activated Carbon” filter containing a “100 micron fiber barrier” and a “20 micron sediment filter.” While there are many options for water prefiltering, I think this Camco filter is a fair-quality cost-effective solution that preforms a reasonably good task in a very convenient package.
