What to use when sealing water heater frame to camper?

Hey guys and gals, Just getting around to installing new wh on camper. What type of putty tape should I use to seal the "frame" of the water heater to the outside of the camper. It's a metal siding camper. The old stuff I scraped of was very "gummy" feeling. Any suggestions? Is there something I can just pick up at Home Depot?
Thanks for any help.

I believe it should be sealed with Butyl tape, which can be bought at home depot. I'd then seal it with a caulking as an added measure of protection. Either a high grade silicon or Geocel caulking which i have found will stick to almost anything and is very flexible. Some of the Ace hardware stores near me carry it or you can order it online. I used it to seal seal part of the metalbestos chimney on my house 4 years ago and it's still in good shape. It gets full sun light so uv rays dont effect it and it's temperature range is better than most caulkings on the market. The guy at Ace told be about it and after i tried it i was pretty impressed. I know the maintainence guys at my work use it everywhere because it works.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up using butyl tape and caulking it. Actually out at the lake now on our first outing...New WH working great. I love it when a plan comes together.
