why do I need a hot water tank pressure valve?

Reading the thread about needing a water pressure regulator so you don't burst your plumbing with campground pressures got me to thinking.

The safety value on the hot water tank doesn't release until 150 psi. If our plumbing will leak well below that (if you believe what people post), why have it set that high?

Or just maybe the engineers that really know their stuff know your plumbing is very capable of tolerating high pressures so to prevent an explosion they mandate a 150psi safety valve.

Safe travels

If the tank is filled, then is turned on to heat the water, and some inadvertently closes the valves on the tank it becomes a dangerous situation with no or a failed relief valve. Particularly if the heating controls malfunction and heat the water to boiling.
