Yes, another water heater question.....

I have a 2104s Rockwood Mini Lite and I have yet to get hot, hot water. I am sure it is because I have the knobs turned wrong. So before I go out this weekend I finally remembered to get a picture. It's really not a big issue since so far everywhere we have stayed had showers..but I really need to learn this.
So which way is correct?

The top pic is how you want the valves for normal use.

Cold water (blue line) valve open
Hot water (red line) valve open
Bypass line (short blue and short red) valve closed

The valves are open when the handle is going the same way as the piping (as the hot and cold lines in pic 1)

The valves are closed when the handle is perpendicular with the piping (as the bypass line in pic 1)

That'll definitely affect your hot water temp.

As you can tell just from the piping colors, with that bypass valve open, it's allowing cold water/blue to go straight into the hot water/red piping. So you are getting cold water mixed all in with your hot water, before it get's to your taps.......... as you already have experienced. I bet you notice a big temperature change now when you set the valve correct.

also make sure your outside shower valves aren't open.
this will cause temp mixing.
