30 amp Camper 50 amp Campsite ??

Folks, I have a Roo17 camper and we are going to a park with 20amp and 50amp service. Can I plug my camper into 50amps with an adaptor plug?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, but there's a little risk involved. The 50 amp receptacle on the pedestal is limited to 50 amps of current by its breaker. The 30 amp breaker in your camper protects your camper, so the wiring in your camper would never reach 50 amps. Your shore line is rated for 30 amps, so it is not fully protected from the pedestal to the camper's breaker. In a way, it is protected because the camper's breaker will trip at about 30 amps and prevent the shore line from being overloaded, but if there is a short or current leakage to ground in the shore line or connections, the current could rise above 30 amps.

However, this situation is no different from a light fixture, table lamp, or portable fan in your house. You have a 15 or 20 amp breaker on a receptacle, but the device's internal wiring or cord is usually 18 gauge (and some seem to be smaller), which is not rated for anything close to 15 or 20 amps. The breaker is to protect the house's wiring, not the device plugged into it.

Yes it's true. I will add, all sites I've ever been at, that had 50a also had A 30a plug in as well

Not (ALL) campgrounds have (30A) plug! Most (Not All) campgrounds with this setup will (Rent or Sell) you a (50 to 30) adapter. Youroo!!

That is why I never leave home without an assortment of adaptors.

Wally-World carries most of the common adapters too in their RV section in Automotive. I personally prefer the dogbone type (it looks like a big dog's bone), as you can close the electrical box cover when using this type and can't when using just the straight kind adapter.

This has been posted (Many) times but, when I test the C/G elec. BOX for proper wireup I have also found (Bad-Loose-Burnt) 30A sockets. I pull out our (50 to 30) adapter and use the (50A) side,also after checking it as well! Youroo!!

I've been to private CGs twice that had 50 amp only posts. They both offered
to loan me an adapter if I needed it.

I have my own and by golly I paid for it and I was gonna use it!

FYI- WallyWorld used to carry them in the RV isle but my local store no
longer has them and they show "out of stock" online! This is for the pig tail adapter. You can get the 50 to 30 straight adapter at some WallyWord stores.

-2nd FYI- you are looking for the 50 amp MALE to 30 amp FEMALE adapter.
They can be had both ways so pay attention to the one you buy!

This is the one I have (just in case). I tested it once but never had need to use it. I bought it as I find some of the older SPs around here seem to have well-used 30amp outlets and I wanted the option to use the 50 if needed.

I agree with Scott. After melting some of my cords I asked the Dealer what to do. He recommended using the 50 amp adapter because so many of the 30 amp outlets at parks are trashed. He stated that it was safe to do. So far they have never steered me wrong.

Same thing happened to us last week. CG only had 50A or 20A and it was HOT. One of the staff members was stopping people as they came in and checking to see if they needed adapters, and then delivered them from the store. Loaners were a nice bright pink and purple. Just said drop if off when you leave...

That was a nice surprise. Too many places wouldn't have a loaner, but would be happy to sell you one.

This is Shenandoah River State Park. We like to stick with State Parks as they don't cram ya in with your neighbors. And I agree most parks have the 30 & 50 amp plugs but my wife asked the reservatiion office and guess we will see when we get there but I also like to have my own gear.
