30A + 15A to 50A adapter

I understand how the 30A to 50A works.

My dad said he saw this 30+15 adapter being used by a camper at a state park. I guess attempting to take advantage of a little extra power from the 15A receptacle (separate breaker at least) located in the power pole.

Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Thoughts?

Yeah, my first thought is....ok they put the 30A on one side and the 15 on the other side......where is the balance? Would it be switchable.

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about a "cheater box"? This is where it has two males ends that plug into a 30 amp and 15/20 amp outlet, and are connected to a 50 amp female outlet.

Amazon.com: 50 Amp Female to 30 Amp and 20 Amp Male Cheater Box RV Park Power Motorhome 50 Amp Box: Everything Else

Or are you talking about a Y adapter that has a 50 amp male plug, that then Y's off into a 30 amp female and 15/20 amp female?

Yes, thanks guys, they both look like what I was thinking of.

I actually like the one with 2 30A with the adapter so that one could choose which side had the lower amperage. (I guess they take the two plugs and put one on each leg.)

I have used the 30/15amp - 50amp pigtail and it worked fine. Ran both A/Cs and everything else we wanted without ever popping a breaker. They will not work on an outlet that has a GFI though.

AquaMan: Great! Personal experience. Thanks. Do you know/care how the load is split up?

There's a technical description on the forum somewhere, but it essentially supplies a leg from the 15amp and a leg from the 30 amp giving you a total of 45 amps. This is oversimplified, but when I'm camping and it works, I don't care.

Thanks, ironj. Are you able to change which side has the 15 and which side has the 30? Does it matter?

AquaMan: That is exactly what I expected it to do. Good.

Here are my thoughts:
A normal 50A service is 220V or two times 110V combined. The 220V is divided in the camper into two sides of 110V each. Now, depending on where the larger load is connected (say the A/C) it would be handy to be able to shift the 15A from one side to the other. I would imagine that with the dual A/C like mine has that one is on one side and the other unit is on the other. All speculation of course.

I guess I need to study a wiring diagram.

Thanks all. Any more thoughts?

You are correct in saying the 2 A/Cs are split on different legs. I wouldn't worry about studying diagrams and such, plug it in and go! I do have an EMS built in, that I can monitor voltages and amps, so that helps.

I have never been anywhere that had 2 30 amps receptacles in the pedestal. Are you sure you would not prefer this:

Thats funny, Like you I have an entire box of adapters except the one I listed above. It is amazing how much stuff you can accumulate just so you can be sure your RV/camper experience will be suitable, HA! You could certainly use a 30-15a adapter.

Yeah, guys. I have the adapter. I still am thinking that this is the best setup so that I can decide which leg gets the 15A and which gets the 30A.

Thanks for all the information.

Im still not sure how it works. ..because with just one leg plugged in my trailer will attempt to run BOTH ac if you accidentally turn em on. (Obviously breaker trips) so what is wired to what and how does that work?...I have a progressive panel....still not convinced there IS a benefit to putting 30 to one leg over the other?
