50 amp extension cords

looks like i will be 4 feet from my electrical socket in my new lot..

walmart has a 35 amp extension cored but not a 50..

can i use a 35 amp cord to connect to a 50 amp with my adapted and not have issues with my unit.

the lot socket has both ..

I'm assuming you are permanently parked if you are a in a destination trailer?

The 30 amp with adapter will work for now but I would suggest finding a longer extension so you are on 50 amp. Even if you have to order one online. You'll be better off in the long run IMO.

Get a cord that is rated for 50 Amp when connecting your 50 Amp trailer to 50 Amp service! Try RV dealerships, online or have one custom made - no shortcuts.

Sounds like you're not wanting an extension cord, but a short power cord with the twistlock connector to connect to the RV? If that's the case, you're probably better off buying the parts and making your own. Looks like it'll cost you a little less than $100 for the parts to make one.

The 30 amp cord would be ok.

I assume you understand that a 30 amp cord only carries 30 amps!

A 50 amp cord is actually two fifty amp circuits. Thus a total of 100 amps of service.

With only 30 amps you would have to be very careful what is running. Might not be able to run both ac units etc!

Unless you are experienced with electrical issues, I would suggest you purchase a ready made cord. A 30A RV requires a 2 conductor and gnd in the wire. A 50A RV requires a 3 conductor and gnd extension wired properly.

Just make sure to get the connections REALLY tight. The worst mistake amateurs make is to only snug-down the connections.

And you must observe the color code for 50-amp connections.
At both ends:

• The green wire must go to the green-painted terminal
• The white wire must go to the silver-colored terminal
• The other two wires (could both be black or could be black and another color) go to the two brass (gold-colored) terminals. It doesn't matter which goes to which.

There is one thing I don't understand. The Original Poster says he is four feet from an outlet. The power cord that comes with his trailer should be much longer than that. Why is he looking for another cord?

I interpreted it to mean he's going to be 4' feet short given his current cord and needs an extension. But, I could be wrong...

Sounded like that you will be at a stationary spot. If you have 2 a/c then you need the heaver cord to hook up to the 50 amp. Even if you have 1 a/c I would stay with the 50 amp. to be safe what ever you are running on electric. If you are staying put and you may be adding more electric gadget down the road.

Does anyone think adding an extension cord to a permanent site is a good idea? I would not want a 50 amp plug laying on the ground at my site. Once again just my 2 cents.

I elevate mine (the connection) with a sawed off 1 foot section of a 2"x4" and covered. No worries.

I've had a 30 amp extension and plug lying on the ground, powered, for six years without issue. It's under the trailer, though.

Kinda feel like the walleywizard.

Whether I was 4’ or 35’. I think I would prefer not to have a lot of extra cord there on the ground nor a male female connection laying in the rain! I would make one. Or have it made.

On my fifth wheel my shore power cord trailer end Plug is not the same as an extension cord. Be careful.
