50 amp on 30 amp service

Ignorant electrical question here. If I hook up my 50 amp rig to a 30 amp service with a dog bone will both 50 amp legs get power? For example all my appliances are on one leg, and my current A/C is on another leg. I will be adding a second A/C soon and it I believe is on the second leg with the current main A/C. Are both legs energized from a 30 amp feed? Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I have a mechanical background. Electricity is witchcraft to me LOL.

Yes both leg will be live at 120 volts, but you are limited to 30 amps total. If you use both AC and other appliances at same time, the 30 amp power pole breaker will trip. You have to manage your power consumption.

This is a good thread to read.

Awesome. That is what I assumed. I just wanted to be sure we would be able to run the main A/C during the day and switch over to the bedroom at night. Thanks!!

Yes, as explained when using the proper adapter, the L1 hot leg of the 30 amp outlet is jumped over to the L2 leg of your 50 amp RV

So the 30 amp L1 will provide power to both the L1 and L2 of your RV, so everything is powered, just at 30 Amps total

Appliance Amps

This chart might help you stay under 30 amps.

I emboldened wmtire's statement of a "proper adapter" to point out there have been reports on a few different forums that 'some' adapters (and I have no clue what brand) DO NOT tie both legs together leaving folks scratching their heads.

A proper 30a to 50a dogbone will tie them together so make sure you test the one you purchase so you don't have a WTH moment.
