50amp plug blew up

Our 2019 Forrest River Hemisphere was plugged up to a surge protector but suddenly I heard a big pop 3 times as nd then seen smoke outside. Plug that plugs to TT was smoking. Not the surge protector or pedestal. Then no power including 12 volt lights and fridge. What happened

It sounds like the connection at the rig burned up probably due to loose wiring so all your incoming power was lost.

Would that cause 12 volt lights and fridge that can run off battery to go out? We have a newer fridge that can run off battery

My 30 amp did that. White wire inside the wall behind the 30 inlet had not been tightened and melted down, arched and lost power. Easy replacement but could have caught fire. Click image for larger version

My husband is checking everything. Usually when we are not hooked up to power pedestal we can run lights and fridge. We have nothing.
Second thing that happened to us in a week. Black tank fell and cracked where it hooks to commode. Warranty is taking care of that but tank ordered and no bathroom till tank comes and taken in to fix. We are out 9f home state right now.

Have you been in contact with Hemisphere Customer service?

They can have a mobile repair guy at your camper almost same day since it is most likely under warranty.

If you are replacing the connection on the side of your trailer, you should consider replacing with a Smart Plug. Seems to be a much better product that the standard plugs used. I've seen lots of recommendations for them including from Mike Sokol the RV Electric guy.

This may sound weird, but years ago I had my power cord melted and fused to the podium by a lightening strike. We were away from the RV at the time, so no injuries and minor damage. Our cat, however, was never the same.

Surge?

The surge could have been enough to blow the "reverse polarity" fuses in the converter. Look for a pair of 30 amp or 40 amp fuses that might be blown.

It could also have triggered a hidden circuit breaker in the 12v portion. These are usually hidden under the trailer or under the frame in front (if a towable). These don't look like a household circuit breaker. See the image below. Just push the little button on the end.

Another possibility is that you've had the battery disconnect switch set to disconnect and have been running on power from the pedestal only.

A bit late to help you now but if you got back with the same connector be sure to give it a good twist when connecting it. It is a twist lock connector. Failure to properly lock it can result in a burnt plug.

If you have an appointment to get you unit looked at.... STOP trying to 'fix' it.
The dealer has to know Everything that is going on with the unit. Don't 'try to fix something that he should be doing. You do not want him to ask you 'what did you do? and you say that you did this and this and this and 'then' the lights work..... No... No... NO....

Disconnect the battery and walk away from it until you take it to the dealer.

imo.

50 amp problems

Maybe it was a reverse wired neutral/ hot. It happened to me. The campsite was opening a new section. They said they weren’t responsible for my damage. I hard wired a 50amp surge protector. Or test every time you hook up? Or take your chances (usually safe if campsite is used a lot!)

We have power back. My husband has Electrical experience plus took an RV Tech course. We are taking it in for another reason but will tell them what happened.

He replaced the connection on side of the trailer. Did not see an issue but to be safe changed it . Got a new cord. Checked pedestal to make sure all good there. Checked all the fuses. Tightened everything. All working.

Make sure the cord connector is twisted to the right, when plugging into the trailer outlet.
