6v battery help

Well I’ve decided to go with dual 6v’s and am planning to install them this upcoming week. I’ve researched the topic on here and like the box / venting idea that another member has posted on here. Box was purchased at wal-mart and with a few mod’s looks like it should work fine. In the pictures that member posted it looks like he has the ground wires going through some kind of block. I think someone mentioned that was a shunt. Anyone know what it is for and if I need to do the same? I know just enough to make me dangerous when it comes to electricity.

The shunt is used for monitoring the current going into (charging) or coming out (consumption) of the batteries. It's really a high-current, low resistance link where an electronic monitor can read the voltage differences on either side to measure the current flowing through it.

I think the Trimetric units are pretty popular in RVs. I have one from a company called Microlog that provides similar features, but bang for the buck is probably not as nice as the Trimetric.
