after reversing battery cables Stereo not working

Ok like an idiot I connected the battery cables in reverse today. I was moving the slide out and it did not move so I grabbed my wrench to loosen the slide from underneath and had my DW to hit the switch to go out and the slide out came in, did not know the motor would move in reverse, but if the battery is connected backwards so that made me think "oh $&?#" I have the cables backwards. It caused the 2 - 40 amp fuses to blow. I replaced the fuses and everything seems to be working but the stereo, checked and even swapped the stereo fuse and still it did not power on. Is there a fuse on the back of the stereo?

My saying everything seems to work, I will elaborate and say the lights, which when turned on I hear the fan on the converter come on and that tells me it is working. Am i correct? What other method can I use to confirm the converter is not damaged? Should I check the refrigerator?

Please help one of those idiots....me!

there may be a fuse behind radio but thats a big maybe .
most newer converters are protected from reversing cables . I think youll be ok .
hopefully your radio is to

Thanks turbo

Do you have a suggestion about the radio...did it get fried because it will always try and get power when a battery is connected?

im not sure about the radio man . normally the fuses will blow for the converter to protect all the 12 volt devices .
it cannot hurt to pull radio to check if theres a inline fuse . and hopefully you find one!

I have seen a converter fried before from hooking cables up backwards "fuses didnt blow" It "appears" that your ok .

More than likely you will find an inline fuse behind the radio.

I did the same thing once and had to remove my stereo from the mounting to get at the in-line fuse behind the unit.

I've done that too. Lots of people have. Try wiggling the radio fuse in the fuse box, see if that helps. Pull the radio and use your test light see if you got any juice back there.

Thanks

I will pull the stereo and see if mine has an inline fuse. I guess I am glad that is the only issue! HC

not sure abt ur stereo but some equipment has a reverse polarity diode in it that will prevent damage. usually if this is blown, it continues to blow fuses until it is replaced. i have seen a couple cases where the diode went open but that was rare.
i would go into the stereo and see if are any visible signs of burning components near where the power comes into the unit. hopefully, it will be an easy fix.

Looks like my zx75 and yes there should be a fuse behind it. Mine survived having the battery hooked up in reverse and it took me 30 minutes to figure out what i had done. Just replace the inline fuse. Here is a pic of my 75.

Thanks

Now to get an inline fuse to replace the one that is blown....15 or 10 amp?

If I had removed the sticker looks like I would have seen the model #.

Again thanks for the help!

It has an inline fuse with 15AL250V marked on one end. Went to Auto Zone and they did not have it, they said the 250 volt is different than the ones they normally carry...the same at 3 other parts stores. Anyone know where I should look at next?

Thanks

if it turns out that the diameter is a little too big, try radio shack. they use a different diameter fuze in electronics. i ran into that with a backup camera. i don't recall the proper term. i found the ones for the backup camera at radio shack.

if the fuse brings it back to life, the reverse polarity diode did its job. if it blows again, that diode has probably shorted. ran into this quiet a bit back in the CB repair days. the ones that succeeded in buring that diode completely out usually were the ones that replaced a 2amp fuse with a 20. that diode can be very expensive; probably abt 25 cents. if someone else changes it, they will probably charge $7.5 labor.

Went to Radio Shack and Walmart but no luck. There are a couple of other stores/distributors in the area so I will check with them tomorrow and see what I can find. Everyone keeps telling me they have never seen a 30 mm fuse at 15 amps and 250 volts with the ends dimpled. I am also going to search the web and see what I can find for long term needs. Just took the trailer back to storage after cleaning and doing the storm door modification, TV install, and trying to blow it up by hooking the battery up backwards. HC

If you can not find to proper fuse to fit, then just buy an in-line fuse kit at your Radio Shack and change the one at the back of your stereo....
