"Back in the day" the standard RV battery was the same battery used in cars for starting. You could buy one for $20 with "Reconditioned" batteries almost half that. Run 'em until a match put out more light than a battery powered bulb and charge em back up. Next season started with a new battery.
Batteries are better built and a lot more expensive today. Pays to pay attention to all the details we didn't even know about "back in the day".
