What kind of dual batteries, 12 volt or 6 volt. If you don't know, give the numbers on the battery. Also how many cables do you have to connect? Color of cables may help. We don't know if you have a stock or modified battery set up.

I can at least get you started. I don't have knowledge specific to your Salem, but answer these questions to get started.
1. Do you have a volt-ohm meter?
2. Does your batteries have a selector switch? (off-1-both-2)
If you've already installed the batteries, remove them so you have plenty of room to check wires, etc.

I should one thing, and I'm sure everyone will agree. Doing this type of troubleshooting can be very dangerous. You don't want to have anything arc, by touching the hot terminal to ground. Nor to you want to make even one mistake.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this, take it to a service center.

Again solid advice. Hooking up a battery reversed will blow fuses in your converter as well.

I may have arced something already, few sparks so I stopped. 12 volt batteries (2). Two wires from trailer, a white one and a red one. The white is connected to a heavy (also white) wire which is the ground, this goes to the positive on the first battery, of that I am sure. The red one is heavy diameter. Then there are two other wires, one white and one black, lesser diameter.

No. The white wires go to ground and the Negative Terminals. The RED wires go to the positive terminal of your battery. They are your master feeds to the camper's converter. Not as sure about the black and white wire but if seperately fused within 18 inches of your battery may be to your slide(s) or landing gear/power jack.
Your converter will need new fuses and you should take your camper to a repair shop as there may be more damage.

Here is hoping it is just the converter fuses.
