Battery not charging on shore power

Hi all, I have a new to me 2014 rockwood mini lite 2306. The problem I’m having is the battery is not charging on shore power. Battery charges when being towed. I checked the breakers and fuses. When I turn the breaker for the converter off and turn it back on, I hear the converter fan kick on but it only runs for a few seconds before it stops. Any suggestions? Going away Labor Day weekend and would like to get squared away. Thanks!

Do the lights inside your RV work when you are not connected to any shore power?

Trying to determine if you have a problem from the battery or from the converter in order to direct you to causes.

If I remember correctly, they do. I will check tonight to make sure, and get back to you. I do know that if the battery runs low, the retractable awning and ac stop working. As soon as I put battery on charger, they work again. Not sure if this helps but I will double check the interior lights tonight

That does help and sound like the converter is not working right.

You may want to verify the converters 12 volt DC reverse polarity fuses`have not blown. These can be inside the fuse box OR on the converter itself depending on what you got. Read this thread and post #5 for pics of what to look for,

disconnect battery and any solar

connect shorepower 120v and turn ON the converter
90% of you 12v stuff should work...

If the whole converter shuts OFF after a few minutes ... no 12v lights etc
1) 120v Breaker for the converter may be bad
2) converter may be bad

Replacing the converter is a simple job most handy DIY people can perform in under 30 minutes

IF converter works... you need to find the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE output wires to battery
Make sure they are clean and tight...
ESPECIALLY the negative they they be TWO connections to the frame for the negative
one near the battery and the other near the converter.

Near the battery you will/may find a battery disconnect switch and a small squarish shaped 12v breakers with a tiny button to reset them

test them with a multi meter is the fastest way to determine if they are good

Here is a very simple thing to check. Is your battery disconnect switch turned off? If so, the 12V battery will not charge as it is removed from the circuit.

I had this issue this year when my 6-year-old battery would not take a charge this spring. So, I replaced the battery when removing the battery from the trailer I always switch off the battery disconnect switch. I replaced the battery and failed to turn on the battery disconnect switch again. The battery was dead the following morning after spending some time checking the converter and the fuses. I remembered that the switch was off once this was switched on no issue anymore.

Not saying this is your issue but it is worth looking at.

There's a circuit breaker labeled Converter in my power center. The center is NOT the converter, the converter is hiding behind it somewhere.

Test battery voltage after shore power has been off an hour.

Will be 0-12.6 with a known good voltmeter.

Plug in shore power. Voltage at the battery will now be well over 13. Converter likely working.

Report back. Could be the fuses in the converter. The disconnect. The wire lugs. Battery. Lots of possibilities.

Do step one.

Problem solved, I got into it deeper yesterday with a multimeter and follow the electrical flow chart. I had 13.6 coming out of converter so chased down the wiring, turned out to be a bad ground. Now good to go. Thanks everyone for the support.

there are possibly 2 grounds
one at near battery and the other near the converter

follow the wires from each
Converter one ...... the frame connection may be hidden by the underbelly
I had to drop one underbelly panel just enough so I could access the wire from converter to frame it was a PITA but worth the effort to get a good frame connection

scrape paint off frame and the lug should be in direct contact with frame metal
no washers between lug/frame
