Battery question

Ok so first off i need some info on ah. I do know that say you run dual 6v 220ah batteries in series you will only have 200ah of power.

I heard that if you run dual 12v 100ah batteries in parrell you can get 200ah.

Is this true on both? what are the benefits to run 2 6v or 2 12v batteries? Im going back and forth on what i want to run in the new camper we are going to get.

True deep cycle 12v batteries are not that common and tend to be pricey. Most of the once you see and that are installed on campers are dual purpose batteries which have paper thin lead plates.... boat batteries.

Gc2 golf cart batteries 6v. Are very easy to come by and are real deep cycle batteries with thick lead plates and will last a very long time if they are maintained and not abused. And are typically cheaper for the same amp hour.

both of the statements you have listed are true. the advocates for the 6 volts batteries in series always mention capacity and discharge cycles. these are more important in a boondocking offgrid situation.

you didn't even mention the other factors involved such as flooded, maintenance free, or agm battery types.

disclaimer: we are almost always connected to park power and primarily use the batteries to run the residential refrigerattor while towing. two 12 volt maintenance free batteriesd have worked very well for us.

Well we dont know what type we want agm, or flooded type batteries. We will try to boondock. We will be getting a geo pro with the solar capabilites. Just want to be able to not be hooked up and camp where ever we want/ or allowed.

Most OEM charges do not have the correct charging profile for charging AGM or Gel batteries. I would stick with regular flooded lead acid batteries unless you also want to invest in a new charger. You can read more about charging profiles and almost anything else battery related at http://batteryuniversity.com

Batteries that are wired in parallel keep the same voltage as a single battery but you add the amp hour capacity together.
Batteries that are wired in series keep the same amp hour capacity as a single battery but each voltage is added together.
Your useable amount of amp hours are about one half the advertised capacity. At 50% capacity you are down to about 12.1 volts on a 12 volt system. Draining lead acid batteries below that level will result in severe and permanent damage eventually. So two 12 volt batteries with 85 amp hour capacity each, and wired in parallel will result in a 12 volt bank with 170 amp hours and about half of that is useful until depleting to around 12.05-12.10 volts. Then time to recharge your bank.
Two Trojan T-105 six volt golf cart batteries that are wired in series will result in a 12 volt bank with about 225 amp hour capacity, half of it useable. Due to the way the golf cart batteries are manufactured with much heavier lead plates, they will give a lot longer useful life than any number of the 12 volt interstate type marine 12v batteries that you see often installed in rv's. Trojans T-105 weigh 62 pounds each.

If you are planning on boon docking and getting a solar setup go with the 6v GC2 batteries.

Ok is there anything different to do to run 6v batteries besides wire them in series or just drop in wire in series and you are set. Like putting in a 12v battery

Just wire them in series and connect to trailer the same as a 12v battery.

To wire two 6 volt batteries in series you install a jumper cable from the negative terminal on one battery to the positive terminal on the other battery. The gauge of the jumper cable should match the gauge of your trailer's battery cables.

You then attach the positive and negative cables from your trailer to the free terminals, positive on one battery and negative on the other battery. If you have trouble reaching both free terminals position the batteries so the positive cable to the trailer easily reaches the free positive terminal. It is usually easier to relocate the negative ground to the trailer frame, if necessary.

You will be very pleased with the golf cart batteries. We boondock and supplement the power with a once a day generator run. We did add a meter to monitor the status of the batteries. We have never let the fact that we were disconnected from the grid impact our camping.

6v vs 12v is just a packaging difference/issue. Do you want 6 cells or 3 cells in a plastic case?

More or less, buy the heaviest batteries you can find. Mine are 420ah, 6v, and weigh like 120lbs each.

But - make sure to calculate the added battery weight to your loaded weight. Total should not to exceed GVWR. Also, consider the additional weight the batteries will add to your tongue weight (roughly 12-15% of your loaded weight).

Are you saying 220+# in batteries, 2 30# propane tanks, a "bike bunk", bike rack, and 3-4 bikes might change my tongue weight?

Hehe.

Do what I do - tie several hundred helium balloons to the coupler!

That's very "UP" (the movie) of you.

I have a big truck and a little trailer. My level of caring & concern is low.
