My long time friend sent me this yesterday.*
He forgot to pull battery last fall and does not have a battery disconnect.
He retrieved the camper "flagstaff 5er" Sunday and immediately plugged it in .Yesterday he called and said his dw heard a loud boom.
He's installing a new battery box, battery and battery cut off switch this morning.
Battery most likely ran dead several weeks after storage then froze this winter.
Oh woow, I was lucky then ! My battery was dead over the winter too , and I took it home, put it into the garage and charged it. Yikes ! Lesson learned !

I'm guessing battery froze, cracked, and leaked some.
The left over electrolyte off-gassed enough to make a dangerous fuel-air mixture, and it finally found an ignition source.
Or can a battery contain the gasses to a point that they actually over-inflate the box?
Either way, I believe this means there is also a lot of acid suddenly spread over a large area, so this is really a dangerous situation.
Once a battery is left dead it will not likely be of much use anyway, so just change it out and treat the new one better. It's not worth trying to charge, and risking a short and BOOM.
Most likely cause was low electrolite due to frozen cracked cell.
IF you have a low/dead battery be SURE and wear safety glasses or goggles
and check to see electrolite is over top of plates in every cell before attempting
to charge it.
If you find one cell dry, it's probably cracked!
