While it is true a properly charged battery needs to be installed to "smooth out" large load demand on the converter, most converters are quite capable of generating their rated amps of DC (typically 55 amps). Sharp spikes in demand, like moving slides and starting the furnace blower are more easily supplied by the battery, backed up by the converter, so the converter is not stressed by trying to supply large load transients immediately.
Having said that, a properly functioning converter should supply all the DC power your camper normally requires even without a battery installed up to its rated maximum amperage. (Again, operation without a battery is not recommended by the converter manufacturers for longevity).
In fact, a shorted battery may even prevent the converter from generating ANY power due to "fail safe" circuitry in the converter itself (until the bad battery is removed - then it will reset and function normally).
If you have a 55 amp converter, it will supply what ever 12 volt power your camper needs and the balance will be available for battery charging. So, for fastest battery charging on converter, minimize camper 12 volt DC usage.
I hope that helps, Dewayne441
